They charged this man with a misdemeanor assault. He beat up a 14-year-old and he’ s not a fucking felon. This is some fucking bullshit.

The alarm kept screaming: ‘Burglary! Burglary! Burglary!’ I was the only black person in the neighborhood at the time, so I panicked. I knew it didn’t look good. And I didn’t want to die in this movie. So the first thing I did was call 911. The operator was like ‘What’s your emergency?’ I told her: ‘I’m staying at my uncle’s house, and the alarm is going off, and I need you to tell the responding officer to expect a black man.’ And she said: ‘Is your uncle black too?’ And I said: ‘Ma’am, all of us are black.’ Then I fixed up a bowl of macaroni and cheese, turned on all the lights, stood in the middle of the living room, and waited for the knock.”
Mr. Hill, a 30-year-old African-American, was fatally shot by a white sheriff’s deputy who had responded to a noise complaint about music Mr. Hill had been playing in his garage. Toxicology reports showed Mr. Hill was drunk at the time. And after a brief encounter with the deputies, he was discovered dead inside the garage with a gun in his back pocket; the deputies said he had been holding it during their confrontation, though that claim is in dispute. Mr. Hill had been shot three times by one of the deputies, Christopher Newman.
Among other things, a federal jury hearing a wrongful-death lawsuit brought by Mr. Hill’s family was asked to decide whether his constitutional rights had been violated and whether his estate should be awarded damages. How much, jurors were asked, were the pain and suffering of Mr. Hill’s three children worth?
Last week, the jurors delivered their verdict. Deputy Newman had not used excessive force, they concluded, but the St. Lucie County sheriff, Ken Mascara, had been ever so slightly negligent given Deputy Newman’s actions. The jury awarded $4 in damages: $1 for funeral expenses and $1 for each child’s loss.
Because jurors also found that the sheriff’s office was only 1 percent at fault in the death, that award was reduced to four cents. And furthermore, because jurors found that Mr. Hill was intoxicated and mostly to blame for the shooting, a lawyer for his family said Tuesday that a judge would reduce the four-cent award to nothing.
“I don’t get it,” the family lawyer, John M. Phillips, said.
A GoFundMe was set up for the family here. The fact that the meager $4 was reduced to 4 cents only illustrates how little they seem to think a human life is worth. When the police can take in armed white terrorists alive but kill a black man over a noise complaint, it only hammers home the message that it’s dangerous to be a person of color in the United States.
So between the white woman who called the cops on a black family having a BBQ in a park, the white man threatening to call ICE in nyc on Latina women for speaking Spanish, and a white woman literally yelling for the cops while screaming “gun!” on a black man for making a u turn in their neighborhood should educate us all that white people are realizing that institutional racism is real but they are using it for their own white supremacist social benefit.
They are calling for the authorities knowing that the cops will take their side and will either arrest or murder people of color for simply being seen or heard.
